MY SITS Day – I’d like to thank the Academy

Hello and welcome all! It is finally here! My SITS day! For those of you who don’t know about SITS – it’s a group of bloggers that supports each other through blog visits and comments. You can check them out here.

I feel like I’ve been waiting for this day for such a long time and yet I can’t believe it’s finally here! I don’t know what to say. I feel like I should thank the Academy… and by that I mean “sits”terhood! And my wonderful husband and daughter – my inspiration and support in so much of this. But if I’m thanking my inspiration and blog “fodder” … well, I should probably thank the bugs, mice, and the snake (!) in the basement that have provided so much for me to talk (read: complain!) about. Yes, you read that right – it’s been feeling like a full house here recently. My husband argued that I shouldn’t mention all that as you’d think I live in a tenement! But really, we’ve just bought our first house and are dealing with all the joys of home ownership (I never realized that my parents weren’t just born boring and adult – it was thrust upon them. Seriously, now I could have a twenty minute conversation on landscaping, paint colors, how to clean up after a toddler (or husband! Just kidding, babe… ish) or whether the trees will likely fall in the next storm. But I haven’t been out to that cool martini bar in I don’t know how long and I don’t know the name of that new sushi place downtown. We’ve become so suburban! How did this happen?!)

Oh sorry – did I lose half my audience on that last paragraph? Let me try again. Let’s start with a little bit about me. I’m a first time Mom of a 13 month old baby girl in my 30's. I work part time in Finance and really love the balance that this gives me – a decent amount of adult time out of the house where I very rarely discuss whether anyone’s pottied today mixed with a decent amount of baby time, so that I feel like I really get to be a part of her life and see her grow up. My husband is fire fighter / paramedic, so he also has a non-standard schedule which means that between the two of us, we can mostly cover child care. On days when both of us work, my mother in law gets some grandbaby time (usually one day a week). Of course, this doesn’t always work out perfectly and sometimes she goes to some “interesting” places like court.

I started blogging last summer and… ok, I admit it, I thought maybe I could take the blogging world by storm and even make money this way. Yes, yes, feel free to laugh at my naiveté. But, truthfully that wasn’t my only motivation (I promise!). I’d had a bit of a tough time of it working out the balance at the beginning and adjusting to my new life. I wanted to put down some of those thoughts to help me sort it out and because I thought it might help others to know that they weren’t alone. So in that spirit, I wrote this on adjusting to my new role as well as this and this on breastfeeding.

So there you have it – a little bit on me. For my regular followers, thanks so much for this trip down memory lane (it’s like the clip show on sitcoms when the writers just don’t want to write new material… except this was just as hard for me to write!). For those new to the site – thanks so much for coming by! I hope you have some fun and will come by to visit again – I look forward to “meeting you” through your comments and sites!

And last… while you’re stopping by, I’ll make my ongoing request for baby food recipes or suggestions to get a picky toddler who doesn’t like solids to eat ANYTHING!

  4. Congrats on your SITS Day!

I saw your question regarding baby food recipes - have your tried any recipes from Jessica Seinfeld's Deceptively Delicious book? Some of those worked for me when my 2 year old was at his pickiest!

    Enjoy your day!

  8. Happy SITS Day! I feel your pain with the picky eater. My little boy won't eat meat....except for McDonald's burgers (not that he gets them very often). We've coined the term McVegan to describe him!

    Come visit my blog sometime!

  12. I read one of your breastfeeding posts and it brought back some awful memories...i have to say, i think there's a special place in hell for some of the lactation consultants in the hospital i gave birth in (twice). umm, no you may NOT touch my boobs, strange woman who smells like patchouli, and no you also cannot tell me that formula is going to make my child obese. I ended up breastfeeding both of my boys, but I have to say the lactation consultants very nearly put me off breastfeeding for life.

anyhoo, happy SITS day...hope all your bloggy dreams come true. :)

  15. Happy SITS day. My son was not picky as a toddler, but he's more picky now. He hates cheese. Who hates cheese? I mean really? It's un-American or something?

  16. Happy SITS day! I, too, am a first-time mom of a 15 month old little girl! It sounds like we have a lot in common - I, too, struggled with finding a balance between work and motherhood and being a wife/friend/daughter/etc. It does make for some interesting blogging, doesn't it?!

So I'm in the same boat you are! :( Congrats on your new home. I've been in my 'first' home for almost 4 years now and I still love it! 45. Congrats on your day in the sun! Interesting blog...I too was able to work p/t when my first child was born and it was a blessing. My only advice on picky eaters? Don't let them snack/drink milk or juice between meals. In my experience, a truly hungry child will eat just about anything. Good Luck!

As for how to get your little girl to eat anything solid I am pretty much no help but you can puree almost ANYTHING and stick it in the things she does like. I have had a bit of success with that myself with my 2 picky eaters.

    Good Luck!

As for your daughter, just keep trying. And puree lots of stuff for her. I've had a picky eater.

If you are extremely worried, maybe see about food therapy for her?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Happy SITS Day! Hand held blenders are great for pureeing anything and everything. Babies will eat when they are hungry, you don't want to make this a food war at this young age. They go through phases - there will come a time when all she will want is mac n cheese or some other fave. You could also give her a vitamin to make sure she gets all her nutrients. For now if all she wants is "soup" then so be it, gradually introduce new foods to try without forcing. let her 'explore' them and some of it may make it into her mouth.

Have you tried some of the Annabel Karmel books? When my daughter first stared eating solid food all she would eat were the casseroles from her books, which was great as they contain lots of meat and vegetables.

As for the things in the cellar I totally sympathize! Last night I was kept awake by lots of scampering and other strange noises and fear we have visitors in our attic. My husband refuses to go and check, so guess who will be heading up there today with a flashlight?

  141. Happy SITS day!

I also have a picky baby (who also has massive food sensitivities/allergy) so I feel you on how challenging it is. Mine won't pick up anything that's not solid, but he will allow it to be placed in his mouth. Ugh. Have you tried pureed beans or tofu? Great source of protein, as is yogurt. Will she drink a smoothie? You can sneak stuff in there.

Off to check out more of your blog!

  151. what a fun SITS day! I laugh about your no-solids-toddler, only b/c I've been there. My pedi always said not to worry - they'll eat when they're hungry. Give a gummy vitamin to boost the intake. If I remember any of my tricks I'll be sure to share!
